Piazzetta San Marco
Painting - Oil on Wood (24.9 x 22.2 cm) 1760-1770

This painting by Francesco Guardi integrates the heavy atmosphere of stormy weather into a classical view of Venice.

This choice from Guardi highlights the beauty of the Piazzetta's architectural elements.

In the background, you can recognize the island of San Giorgio Maggiore with its basilica and bell tower still illuminated by the light that crosses the clouds.

A few sailing boats are suggested on the Saint Mark's basin, while one of the two columns in the Piazzetta stands in the centre of the painting, the one with the winged lion of Saint Mark, the powerful symbol of Venice that knows no fear.

On the left, Guardi represented part of the Doge's Palace.
