Francesco Guardi (October 5, 1712 - January 1, 1793) “Gondolas on the Grey Lagoon in Venice”

Painting - Oil on Canvas (31 x 41.8 cm) 1765

At the time of Francesco Guardi, gondolas in Venice still had the felze. This small removable cabin protected passengers from the sun and the elements, with added interest for those who did not want to be recognized.

In this grey and blue painting, Guardi deliberately used a restricted range of colours to convey the atmosphere of the day he painted this picture.

We are in front of a quiet lagoon, gently illuminated by a diffused light.

The walls and bell towers we see on the skyline are probably those of the island of Murano, but it is also possible that Guardi recreated the landscape to match the impression he wanted to convey.

The perception of this immobility gives the viewer an impression of calm serenity, where time seems to stand still if it were not for the gondolier rowing in the foreground and the inflated sail in the background on the right.

The water is as calm and smooth as the sky so that every element is highlighted by the light that bathes the lagoon.

For example, the post indicating the canal's course to the right of the gondolier in the foreground, as well as all the small white dots corresponding to the figures, the bow shackles of the gondolas or the sail of the boat on the horizon.

It is a beautiful canvas that is very well composed and takes us into this landscape where our eye glides over the waters of the Venetian Lagoon.
