Hans Memling “The Virgin and Child” Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan in Italy
Hans Memling (1430 - 1stt August 1494) “The Virgin and Child”
Painting - Oil on Wood (44 x 32 cm) 1490The Virgin Mary and Jesus are represented on the golden background of a niche that recalls the celestial light of ancient icons.
Jesus is sitting on a cushion, and Our Lady holds him with one hand while with the other, she shows him a small white carnation in front of his eyes.
The white carnation has symbolic value and is generally associated with engagements.
It refers to Mary's mystical wedding with Christ in the present case.
The subject and its representation are most likely the work of Hans Memling himself, while students may have painted parts of the painting in his studio.
Note the softness of the skin on the Virgin's face, the quality of the drapes and the harmony of the bright colours of her garments.
